RAF Scampton Visit

April 10th, 2017

Cadets had a great time today at RAF Scampton in which we joined cadets from 2195 Squadron. The day started with a visit around the museum, which specifically focused on the Dambusters. Next, the cadets were lucky to have lunch in the mess and see what life in the RAF is like. Finally, the cadets spent the afternoon being welcomed into the hangar where the Red Arrows are maintained and were given a tour around by the mechanics. The day ended with a chance for the cadets to watch a spectacular practice, which was closer than most of the public will ever get. A special thank you to SAC Dinsdale and the staff working with the Red Arrows that let the cadets in to see what they do.

Supporting the Public

March 7th, 2017

One of the organisations qualifications is Youth First Aid, not a qualification we all hope to use but most certainly one of the most rewarding should we need to. It was one of those days for CPL Mia Radford of 1360 (Stapleford & Sandiacre) Squadron, today while she was out in Derby City Centre. A young woman had collapsed and needed emergency support. Using her extensive First Aid knowledge, CPL Radford acted quickly and promptly by checking she was breathing, calling the emergency services and placing the lady into the recovery position. These are life saving skills and we are glad that CPL Radford was there to put practice into reality. Flying Officer Jess Kment, OiC 1360 Squadron has commented, stating that she is very proud of CPL Radford, having the confidence to perform First Aid and she hopes to deliver the Youth First Aid Course to many more Cadets.

On the Run

The Morning started with a quick team brief from the Wing Sports Officer, wishing everyone the best of luck out on the course today. The First race got under way just as the rain fell with the second and third not far behind. A brutal course, steep hills, muddy fields and running through the forest all in the aim of bringing Silverware home. Final Parade approached, The wing was confident with getting good results and that proved itself. All 6 Cadets came back with medals, winning 3 out of the 5 categories and coming third in the other two. Members of Stapleford Air Cadets Become Empowered After Regional Media Course

January 15th, 2017

On Saturday 14th January, three members of 1360 (Stapleford and Sandiacre) Squadron travelled to RAF Wyton near Peterborough, to develop their skills to take on the role of Media and Communications Officer (MCO).One of the main points of the course is to expand their horizons and learn about the challenges that the MCO faces and what is expected of them. The course talked about various enthusing topics, from press release writing, to how to get the local community more involved with the whereabouts and events of the squadron, to social media and photography. A variety of Regional Staff spoke on these important topics and gave personal insight as well as illustrating their own experiences and stories from their roles. Throughout the day, the group worked through a range of material, culminating in the opportunity to write their own press release to be reviewed by the directing staff. The day was… Read More »

2016 draws to a close

December 31st, 2016

As 2016 draws to a close, I’d like to just say how proud I am of #team1360, staff and cadets, who have been tremendous this year. I’m not going to go into a long spiel about everything we’ve done, but to finish in the top 4 of every major Wing competition (yes, including swimming!) as well as continue on through Region to Corps again for drill and banner drill, shows that the team spirit and dedication is there. This isn’t possible without the staff who give up their time- I’d like to say a huge thank you to them for their support and efforts during the year and welcome and offer good luck to those new staff who have recently joined the team. To the cadets- remember to take every opportunity you can and continue to work hard and be loyal to your unit. This organisation can offer you so… Read More »

Corps field day

November 19th, 2016

I am so proud! 2nd- Banner Drill 3rd- Foot Drill (highest placing ever in this category) The high standards and effort put in by those cadets in the two teams was exceptional. The comments and praise from the QCS Warrant Officer and Corporal was high praise indeed. Thanks to CWO Cox, CWO Kirk and Sgt Munn who came back to us following their transfers, and a big well done to those cadets who became part of the team during the later stages. I’d once again like to say the biggest ‘thank you’ to FS (ATC) James Glover, who for the third year running has given up more of his free time and perhaps sanity, to support the team and get them to where they are today. It would not have been possible without him. #team1360 is truly awesome. All the cadets of the squadron should be proud of themselves. You… Read More »

Wing Swimming

October 27th, 2016

Wow! #team1360 recently competed at the Wing Swimming Competition of 2016 and now the results are out! Predominantly one of the competitions that 1360 has previously found challenging to do well in, this year the Squadron pulled off its best performance in a long time with an incredible 4th place! Last year we came 16th (out of 29), which just goes to show what an awesome team the squadron is and this has meant the squadron has come top 5 in every major competition this year. A special mention to Cpl Radford and Cdt Wheatley who were both selected to represent the Wing at the Region Swimming Competition due to their fantastic performances.

On arrival, the Wing Banner Party, commanded by CWO Oliver Kirk, and the Squadron Banner, held by FS Matthew Osbiston prepared themselves ready for the church service in which the banners are presented and laid upon the alter. After listening to proceedings, the cadets filed in to the church. Once the service was in full swing, the congregation heard various stories and speeches from the Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, Sir John Peace, as well as from the Vicar. Celebrating 75

September 18th, 2016

Friday 16th of September saw #team1360 celebrate their 75th year, having been formed in 1941, following the formation of the Air Training Corps. Now stylised as The Royal Air Force Air Cadets, cadets all over the country have been celebrating and taking part in a range of events. OC 1360, Flt Lt Katie Macpherson, tasked FS Zach Davies with creating additions to our usual annual BBQ and in the style of 1360 NCOs he did not disappoint. He had ambitious plans to make the night a huge success- from a live band Acoustic Union, to relaunched Squadron merchandise and memorial souvenirs, the ideas came to fruition thanks to FS Davies, FS Stuart McPherson and Sgt Matthew Osbiston. The night could certainly not have been successful however, without the support of the Squadron’s fantastic civilian committee, who threw themselves behind the evening and were paramount to its success. Not content with… Read More »

This year we also had Sgt Osbiston win the Best Cadet Photograph aspect of the media competition. A big well done for that! Let’s hope it’s third time lucky at Corps- I know you will all give it your very best efforts.

In the smokehouse!

September 8th, 2016

Tonight #team1360 are down at Long Eaton Fire Station for some challenges and learning. The cadets have been split into teams and have a range of tasks; saving drowning people by throwing a towline out (and scoring points…in which the staff and SNCOs got only a little competitive), putting a pop up tent down in the fastest time possible (again competitive!) and a radio communication exercise. The cadets were also given a presentation on ‘Safe driving’ as a means of educating them on the high statistic of young people who have a serious crash in the first six months of driving.
